PKU deepens ties with top European university KU Leuven

Peking University, Nov. 19, 2019: Rector Luc Sels, president of KU Leuven, visited Peking University to deepen collaboration between the two leading institutions.

Hao Ping, president of Peking University, welcomed Sels’ visit, praising KU Leuven’s long history and world-famous reputation for technological innovation. 


Hao also pointed out the “solid foundation for cooperation”. The two universities first established  a partnership in 2012 and have since continued to strengthen ties through high-level visits and alumni connections. Hao encouraged Peking University’s School of Economics to promote further exchanges with KU Leuven in teaching and research.


Sels highlighted the progress in doctoral student exchange and academic research. He expressed hope for furthering cooperation in doctoral training and joint research, as well as willingness to develop the relationship with the PKU School of Economics. The cooperation strategy is known as the Leuven Sino-Euro EDGE platform, which stimulates research cooperation through an emphasis on advancing interdisciplinary ties.


"KU Leuven and Peking University want to join forces in multiple disciplines and domains, from philosophy and language and regional studies, to artificial intelligence and technology transfer," said Sels. "We want to discuss how we can jointly invest in research and exchange projects for students and academics.”

KU Leuven is a prestigious Belgian university, ranking in the top 50 in the world according to Times Higher Education and Europe’s most innovative university according to Thomson Reuters. It is part of the League of European Research Universities (LERU Group), a network of 23 world-class universities including Cambridge and Oxford. KU Leuven now has over a thousand Chinese students, as well as a Beijing alumni network.
