Peking University Tian Gang elected New President of China Mathematical Society

Peking University, Nov. 27, 2019: On November 21, the 13th Conference of members of the Chinese Mathematical Society and the academic annual meeting were held in Foshan, Guangdong province. It was also the time for the general election of the society which takes place every four years. On November 24, the results of the election were announced. Tian Gang, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was elected new president of China Mathematical Society.

The Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS) is an academic social group of Chinese mathematics professionals and it is a constituent part of the China Association for Science and Technology. The purpose of the CMS is to unite mathematical professionals to promote the development of mathematics, boost China’s science and technology, encourage the growth of science and technology talents, make contribution to revitalizing economy. The main work of the CMS includes organizing academic exchange activities, editing and publishing mathematics journals, carrying out international academic exchanges, holding mathematics competitions, promoting popularization of mathematics and more.
Tian is vice president of Peking University, director of Beijing International Centre for Mathematical Research, and also member of the executive committee of International Mathematical Union. He obtained his doctoral degree at Harvard University and has made great contributions to solving significant problems in mathematics and physics.
