IO course: WHO and Global Public Health Governance

Peking University, March 4, 2020: The outbreak of COVID-19 is not only a threat to many people, but also a test to the global public health and health governance system. Against this backdrop, the World Health Organization (WHO) has undoubtedly drawn global attention. What is the role of WHO in the face of the epidemic? How will the global public health governance address common human challenges? The answers can be found through PKU’s first online International Organization (IO) course, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. on March 6.

Moreover, Peking University Student Career Center is also organizing a series of online job fairs and offering career coaching services, in an attempt to help students seek jobs amid the COVID-19 epidemic.

About the speaker


Dr. Xie Zheng, deputy director of Department of Global Health, has held a position at School of Public Health, Peking University since 2007. She was seconded to WHO Department of Ageing and Life Course as a technical officer from June 2018 to June 2019. Her main research directions include global health governance, health policy and system and health development assistance.

As a key participant, Dr. Xie was deeply involved in the DFID Global Health Support Programme (GHSP), China-Australia Integrated Health and HIV/AIDS Programme and China-UK Health Support Programme. Dr. Xie also represented China to attend the consultations of WHO’s Framework of Engagement with Non-State Actors (FENSA). She was previously a member of WHO Working Group on Reform representing Western Pacific Region.

About IO Course

The “IO Career Series” (International Organization Career Development Program) was launched by the Student Career Center of Peking University in February 2017. Till now, more than 40 “IO Career Series” events have been successfully organized. These events included: “IO Talk” (International Organization High-level Forum); “IO Course” (International Organization Career Course); “IO Salon” (International Organization Career Salon); “IO Visit” (International Organization Career Visit).

The IO Course mainly invites heads from regional offices of international organizations and senior experts to introduce the career development path in international organizations. Keynote speakers previously included Yang Wenyan, chief of Global Dialogue on Social Development Branch in the Division for Inclusive Social Development of UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Vietnam and Marielza Oliveria, director and representative of the UNESCO Beijing Office.
