Peking University, May 22, 2020: On May 14, the 2020 Beijing-Hong Kong Universities Alliance (BHUA) council and work meeting took place online. Nearly 70 leaders and representatives from member universities of the Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance, and officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Office of Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan Affairs of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Education Bureau of HKSAR Government joined the conference. Wang Bo, vice president of Peking University was also present at the meeting.

Tan Tieniu, deputy director of the Central People’s Government’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong SAR, spoke highly of the great achievements BHUA had made in various fields such as technology innovation. For future development of the alliance, he thought that BHUA should further explore novel communication ways, enhance mutual understanding and trust, make efforts to cultivate outstanding youngsters and establish correct social values for the society. Officials attending the online conference gave speeches and highly praised the achievements of BHUA. They expressed the hopes that members of BHUA will strengthen cooperation and achieve flourished progress in exchanges, quality education, nurturing talents and innovation.
Wang Bo gives a speech
Peking University was the director unit of BHUA from 2018 to 2019. On behalf of Peking University, Wang Bo gave a summary report on BHUA’s work over the past two years. He indicated that BHUA had put great efforts into setting up a regional collaboration education platform and a scientific research platform with the support of Beijing and Hong Kong. In the post-pandemic era, the alliance should jointly overcome difficulties, devote efforts, and fulfil social responsibilities.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is the director unit from 2020 to 2021. Wei Shyy, president of HKUST, praised the great achievements obtained by BHUA during the past two years. He hoped that members of the alliance would continue to deepen institutional collaboration, promote economic, social, scientific, and technological developments of both cities, and strengthen the research on the nurture of talents and student interflow.
In the meeting, member universities, including Tsinghua University, also shared their experiences on post-epidemic development, resource sharing, and scientific research and innovation, forming in-depth discussions. Xia Hongwei, director of Peking University Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, suggested that the alliance could utilize cloud technology to incorporate high-quality teaching resources for online exchange activities between teachers, students and the public. The alliance should deepen the collaboration in the study of the coronavirus, and nurture professional medical talents.
BHUA is a nonprofit university alliance that was jointly founded in April 2018 by 12 universities in Beijing and 8 universities in Hong Kong, with the aim to establish closer exchanges among member universities, enhance talent nurturing, research collaboration, and higher education.
