[NPC & CPPCC 2020] Voices of Peking University at the Two Sessions 2020

Peking University, May 25, 2020: The 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC) were held respectively in Beijing on May 21 and 22. The year 2020 will witness the fulfillment of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China, and the achievement of a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

Six NPC deputies and 18 members of the CPPCC National Committee from Peking University will make suggestions for China’s development at the two sessions. The following are selections of topics that these deputies and members are concerned about.

Li Yihu, an NPC deputy and a professor from the School of International Studies, Peking University, is a leading figure in China who studies the Taiwan model of “One Country, Two Systems” principle.


He mainly focuses on:
1. The Taiwan question
2. The highlight of humanitarianism in the publicity of anti-pandemic battle

China never ceases its efforts to prevent and control the coronavirus outbreak. It is the obligation of academics from Peking University to make contributions to curbing the epidemic for a healthy China.

Professor Liu Yucun, member of the CPPCC National Committee, vice chair of Peking University Council, party secretary of Peking University Health Science Center, and chief physician, focuses on the topics associated to the impact of COVID-19.


These included:
1. The establishment and adjustment of disciplines in relation with medical education
2. Improving universities’ ability to provide public health services by adding disciplines related to infection control.

Because of the pandemic, Peking University has been providing online education for students since February 17, and has adopted a variety of online teaching methods to ensure teaching quality. Against this backdrop, it is worth considering how to improve the emergency management system of public health in China and what role online education will play after COVID-19.

Li Xiaoming, member of the CPPCC National Committee and a professor from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University, has been following closely with the development of information technology and its combination with education.


This year he mainly focuses on:
1. Establishing non-traditional safety precaution and response mechanisms;
2. Issues related to online education.

As the fight against COVID-19 in China has come to a new stage that many of the preventative measures become normalized, industries should make all-round plans for a long-term battle against COVID-19 while resuming operation. Hence, it’s necessary to pay attention to the recovery of the economy that is hard hit by the coronavirus outbreak.

Jin Li, member of the CPPCC National Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the Jiusan Society and a professor from Peking University Guanghua School of Management, specializes in international investment and finance, venture capital and private equity.


At the two sessions this year, he mainly focuses on:
1. Silver economy and the development of the old-age care trust industry;
2. Suggestions on economic recovery after the resumption of work and production.

Beijing implemented new regulations on waste management on May 1. In response to the national call for environmental protection, Peking University issued a notice on garbage sorting on campus. Classifying waste properly is the first step to build an eco-friendly China, and an appropriate and efficient waste disposal is worthy of attention.

Zhao Jindong, member of the CPPCC National Committee, member of the standing committee of China Zhigong Party, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor from the School of Life Sciences, Peking University, has made relevant proposals on the cultivation of young professionals in the field of science and technologies and the ban on fishing in Yangtze River.


This year he mainly calls for the disclosure of the information collected from monitoring the dioxin and heavy metals in the smoke emitted by domestic waste incineration plants and their surroundings.
