Peking University, June 15, 2020: On June 13 and 14, Peking University welcomed the second batch of students returning to the campus of Peking University. These students were mainly Ph.D. candidates of the Class of 2020.
A “one-stop” check-in service station has been set up in the north square of PKU’s Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium, right beside the southeast gate of the University. The service station is divided into three main areas for temperature measurement, identity verification and health kit distribution, respectively. Once the students enter the campus either by school bus or on foot, their body temperature will be checked with a non-contact thermometer by the staff. Students with the temperature below 37.3℃ are allowed to enter the identity verification area where they are required to show the green light on their health code app and their school pass. After the verification process, each student will be given a package with various items, including a handbook titled The Guidelines for COVID-19 Prevention and Control for PKU Students, masks, a thermometer and hand sanitizers.
At 10:20 a.m. on June 13, a bus that departed from Beijing Railway Station parked at the designated drop-off area in PKU. Peng Zhantao, a Ph.D. candidate from the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies of Peking University, and other students got off the bus in an orderly manner under the guidance of the staff. Peng has been away from PKU for several months. “As soon as I got off the train, the teachers were waiting for us at the station. I couldn’t be more excited to be back,” said Peng, whose hometown is in Hunan province. “The arrangements made by PKU are very thoughtful and meticulous. Teachers contacted us and instructed us to finish the online procedures ahead of time, which makes the entire process very efficient.”
On the afternoon of June 14, Xu Huili, a Ph.D. candidate of PKU Law School, returned to school in a “special” way. Three weeks ago, she accidentally hurt her right ankle. As the returning date drew near, Xu Huili was very worried. A teacher from the Law School learned about her situation and made an arrangement exclusively for her. “I was really moved when I saw the wheelchair specially prepared for me the moment I got off the bus,” said Xu. “The teachers at Peking University shoulder so many responsibilities ranging from epidemic prevention and control to student employment issues. I’m eager to see my teachers and classmates back in PKU, against all the odds.”
Wu Yang and He Ling, full-time school counselors, verified the identity of the returning students on the customized system developed by PKU Computing Center, which is able to track and record the whole returning process in its database. “We have been on duty here since midnight,” said He.
After checking in, a student called Wang Lun was worried about getting back to his dorm with a lot of luggage. Thankfully, the University had already prepared shuttle vehicles at the check-in station to transfer students to their dorms. “I didn’t expect that at all and I truly appreciate it,” Wang said.
According to the dorm supervisor, “Students need to follow a strict process when entering the dorm. In addition to checking temperatures, these students also have to register at the reception when entering and leaving the dorm.”
