Peking University, June 11, 2011: The frontiers of physics were to transcend the limit of human knowledge, said Nobel laureate in physics David J. Gross.
Professor Gross made the remarks at the "Centennial Physics Lectures" at Peking University on June 7. The head of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara spoke on "Frontiers of Fundamental Physics."
Professor Gross touched on various aspects of the frontiers of fundamental physics, such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD), supersymmetric (SUSY), string theory, and grand unified theory. He also discussed about cosmology, quantum physics, condensed matter physics, and biophysics.
The audience communicated with Professor Gross after the speech. Professor Wang Enge, vice president of Peking University and dean of the School of Physics, presented a souvenir of the "Centennial Physics Lectures" to Professor Gross. Professor Lin Chao, director of the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, presided over the event.
Professor Gross also visited the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University (KIAA-PKU) and talked with the faculty and students of KIAA-PKU and the Institute of Theoretical Physics.
Professor Gross was born in the United States in 1941. He received his PhD in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966. He was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University and worked at Princeton University from 1967 to 1997 and became a professor in physics in 1972. He was successively awarded Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics and Thomas Jones Professor of Mathematical Physics. Now he serves as director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2004, because of his outstanding contribution to fundamental physics, Professor Gross, together with H. David Politzer and Frank Wilczek, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
