Peking University, Feb. 26, 2012: The “International Winter School of Sino-France Earth System Research Center”, initiated jointly by Peking University (PKU) and LSCE, began recently.
PKU Vice President Li Yansong, and Deputy Director of LSCE, Professor Philippe Ciais, attended the opening ceremony and gave their speeches.
This academic forum aimed to reinforce the communication and cooperation between PKU and LSCE on the research of Earth System Science, as well as to train young scientists and technicians in this field for both countries.
On February 13, PKU Vice President Wang Enge attended the welcoming dinner for this forum and delivered a welcoming speech to wish this forum a success.

This 4-day winter school, with the core theme as Earth System Science, was divided into 4 research interests, namely global biogeochemistry, atmospheric aerosols, simulation of Earth System Processes, and inversion and data assimilation. 16 experts and scholars, from both PKU College of Urban and Environmental Sciences and LSCE, presented 20 academic reports there.

Teachers and students from top universities and institutes such as PKU, Fudan University, Beijing Forestry University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences participated in this forum. Theseattendees fully communicated and discussed with the experts and scholars, gaining the latest information and knowledge in Earth System Science.
During the forum, President Li Yansong signed a memorandum of cooperation between PKU and LSCE with Doctor Philippe Ciais from LSCE at Linhuxuan to co-establish a research center. The goals of setting up this research center are to build a top-class research group in Global Climate Change and Earth System Science, publish high quality papers and monographs, train a new generation of scientists in this field, and increase the research capability of PKU in Earth System Science.
