Peking University, Dec. 1, 2011: On the morning of November 27 (local time), a delegation of Peking University (PKU), led by the school’s Council Chairman Zhu Shanlu, arrived in San Francisco, which was the first stop of their tour to universities and research institutions in U.S. and Canada.
Shao Wei, Counselor of the Educational Section at the Chinese Consulate-General in San Francisco and representatives of PKU Alumni Association of Northern California welcomed the delegation at the airport.

During the welcome banquet, Gao Zhansheng, Chinese Consul General in San Francisco, expressed best wishes for the delegation’s trip and said he was glad to continue serving as a link between PKU, local universities and the public to encourage the Sino-U.S. cultural exchanges. Zhu Shanlu said PKU highly valued collaborations with Stanford, UC Berkeley and other universities on the west coast of the United States. PKU also attached great importance to cooperation with such high-tech enterprises as those in Silicon Valley and various institutions. Zhu hoped the Chinese Embassy and Consulate could continue to support PKU to deepen and expand the cooperation with American universities, research institutions and companies.

In the afternoon, Zhu Shanlu held a discussion with representatives of Chinese overseas students and delivered a speech to hundreds of PKU alumni in Northern California. Zhu pointed out that to stay ahead of becoming a world-class university, PKU must imquality of education in all aspects, pay special attention to attracting more overseas talents and accelerate the construction of quality prove the personnel. Also the alumni as a strong back-up of PKU’s development could strengthen ties with PKU and contribute for its prosperity. Furthermore, Zhu expected Chinese overseas students to keep a close attention to the development of PKU, support its further growth and consider it as a choice of destination when returning home.

Zhu Shanlu's speech were well responded among local PKU alumni and American Chinese scholars. Lots of alumni raised questions and joined in an in-depth and heated discussion with the delegation on issues concerning PKU's development and the donation process.
Afterwards, The delegation would go on to visit Stanford, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Yale, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto and other universities and research institutions, with the purpose of signing cooperation agreements, meeting with international friends and organizations and introducing the latest development and strategies of education and culture of PKU and China.
The delegation planned to hold several discussions with representatives of Chinese overseas students and PKU alumni during the tour. The objectives are to look into the latest progress of world-class universities, enhance communication, strengthen cooperation, attract overseas talents and accelerate the development of PKU to become a world-class university.
