7 OCTOBER 2013 — How did the European crisis start and how did it develop? Which are its historical roots and its links with the US economic crisis?
Dr Julien Mercille from University College Dublin will question the nature and dynamics of the crisis faced by the European countries in his open lecture on Friday, 11 October at Peking University.
He will offer critical perspectives on the ongoing crisis analyzing its nature, origin and links with the issues faced on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean from a political and economic standpoint.
The significance of the shift towards neoliberalism that occurred in the past few decades in Western countries will also be highlighted, focusing on its effects on the European system.
The activity is part of the course in European Studies given in collaboration between the European University Centre, the School of Government and the Centre for European Studies at Peking University, with lecturers coming from Peking University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Autonomous University of Madrid, Lund University, University College Dublin and University College London.

The next lecture will be on Friday, 18 October, with Dr. Ivan Pastine outlining a “Brief economic history of Europe since 1918: episodes which influenced the current structure of the European economy”.
Dr. Julien Mercille received his PhD from UCLA (Los Angeles, USA) in geography. He previously received an MA from the University of Kentucky (USA) in geography and a BA from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in International Development Studies and Political Science. He joined UCS in September 2007. His research focuses on the ongoing economic and financial crisis, and in particular on the media coverage of it. He also has a longstanding interest in US foreign policy and political affairs. He has published extensively on those subjects in peer-reviewed journals as well as in the media and appears on television and radio regularly as an expert on those subjects. His latest book is Cruel Harvest: US Intervention in the Afghan Drug Trade (London: Pluto Press).
