[EUC] European Welfare State - open lecture at PKU

Economic development, political forces and the welfare state: a complex relation that shapes the life of citizens in the European states.

 

Kjell Nilsson, associate professor at the Department of Sociology at Lund University, will describe this relation on Friday, 27 September, in the frame of the course in European Studies given in collaboration between the European University Centre, the School of Government and the Centre for European Studies at Peking University, with lecturers coming from Peking University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Autonomous University of Madrid, Lund University, University College Dublin and University College London.

 

Prof. Nilsson will give an overview of the economic, social and political processes associated with the development of European welfare states, presenting the historical development of European welfare states and their differences. Current development in both Western and Eastern Europe will also be discussed, and the relation between economic development, political forces, and the welfare state will be analyzed in this context.

Kjell Nilsson, PhD, is associate professor at the Department of Sociology at Lund University. His main fields of research and teaching are within the following areas: globalisation and transformation, economic sociology, social policy, sociology of organisations and evaluation research. His PhD dissertation, "Policy, Interest and Power", is a comparative study of the utilisation of social scientific knowledge in different policy sectors, with a focus on the welfare sector.
