CLS was established in April, 2011 by THU and PKU. It is supported by the central government through the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Finance. The mission of the center is to reform education and research, to attract excellent scientists interested in education, to carry out cutting-edge research, and to nurture future generations of innovative scientists and educators.

The iCeMS at Kyoto University is one of the Japanese science ministry's World Premier International Research Center (WPI) Initiative centers. By merging materials science and cell biology, the iCeMS is creating a new cross-discipline between life sciences, chemistry, materials science, and physics, and is anticipated to lead to innovations in medicine, pharmaceuticals, the environment, and industry.
