Peking University, Nov. 4, 2013: Sino-U.S. 1st Annual Forum of Comparative English News Media, Journalism in the Global Environment, jointly organized by Peking University (PKU) and University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), was held at PKU on Oct. 27, 2013. The UHM delegation led by Professor Denise Eby Konan, Dean of the College of Social Sciences of UHM, attended the forum.
Professor Konan in her speech emphasized the significance of communications between PKU and UHM, pointing out that more communication would not only strengthen the constructions of journalism in both universities but also reinforce the trans-pacific partnership. Professor Chen Gang, Vice Dean of School of Journalism and Communication of PKU, stressed the importance of comparison between English news media in China and U.S. Although it is the same language that is used by both Chinese English media and American media, the cultures in the two countries are different in many ways. We should enhance mutual understanding and communication, seek a common ground while reserving differences, and develop the organic combination of culture and language.
Professors from both universities made speeches on the news value, information security, cultural politics, etc. from various perspectives. Representatives from Xinhua News Agency, CCTV English News, China Daily, and overseas media also joined the forum discussion.
The next forum will be held at UHM, where the friendly atmosphere and further discussions will be continued.
