[New Administration] “General“ of PKU's logistics

Peking University, Oct. 20, 2013: Wang Yanglin, a celebrated scholar of geography, was appointed vice president of Peking University (PKU/Beida), read a document dated September 10.

Wang, 50, holds a concurrent post as Chief of General Services, which he assumed in April. He is responsible for a broad array of administrative services, covering PKU’s logistic affairs and workplace safety, the Office of Construction, the Office of Real Estate Management, the Convention Center, the Campus Management and Service Center, as well as Peking University Hospital.

 

“I hope everybody can work hard, fulfill their individual responsibilities, and strive to do a good job in logistic services,” said Wang as the new chief during his visit to various logistic units.

 

Wang’s historical leadership roles at PKU included: deputy dean of the Graduate School from 1999 to 2005, deputy dean of Shenzhen Graduate School between 2001 and 2005, vice provost and executive deputy dean of the Graduate School from 2005 to 2013.

 

Overseeing PKU’s academic affairs from the Graduate School, Wang contributed to the reform for postgraduate education, encouraging all teachers and students to work on innovative researches and to get actively involved in the national key scientific and technological projects.

 

“It’s our common goal to build PKU into a world-class university within six years (by 2018), so each of us should start with ourselves to explore new ways for development and make our contributions to achieving the goal,” Wang pointed out in an annual report of PKU’s discipline evaluation result released by China Discipline Ranking.

 

After receiving a B.S. (1984) and M.S. (1989) in geography from Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an, Wang continued his educational pursuit and earned his Ph.D. at PKU’s former Department of Urban and Environmental Sciences (now a college) in 1992. Between 1992 and 1994, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in Beijing Agricultural University (now China Agricultural University).

 

Since joining the PKU faculty in 1994, Wang has been devoted himself to the study of physical geography, land ecology and sustainable agriculture. He became full professor in 2000. So far, Wang has played crucial roles in around ten key scientific researches including: Subproject of the 973 Program, the Key National Science and Technology Projects and the National Natural Science Foundation Projects.

 

In addition to teaching and mentoring scores of graduate students, Wang has published over 40 articles and essays in leading journals home and abroad, focused on integrated physical geography, landscape ecological planning and land utilization, and regional sustainable agriculture.

 

For his efforts to advance Chinese agriculture and rural development, Wang received a number of awards from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Land and Resources, etc.
