Peking University, Dec. 27, 2018: On December 26th, the Ministry of Education (MOE) released the list of the top ten sci-tech advances of Chinese Universities in 2018. The project of “Video coding of GB Standard AVS2 enabling CCTV broadcasting ultra-HD TV”, undertaken by Gao Wen from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science of PKU, was on the list.
The science and technology commission of MOE singles out ten sci-tech advances annually to propel scientific and technological innovation, and 21 lists have been released since 1998.
The team led by Gao formulated AVS2 based on in-depth industry-college-research cooperation. Targeted at solving the problem of efficient high-definition video coding, the new standard has been making major breakthroughs in spatiotemporal speculation, level conversion, packet entropy coding, adaptive loop filtering, etc.
AVS2 was recognized as the international standard of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and adopted by the Global Ultra-HD Alliance in 2018, after being promulgated as the industry and national standard of radio and television in 2016. Pivoted on AVS2, the research team built an industrial artery, circulating from technological innovation, patent licensing, standard formulation, chip development, to application and promotion, thus taking the initiative of the development of the video industry.
On October 1st, 2018, CCTV adopted AVS2 in the application of 4K ultra-HD TV. So far, the technology has been applied on cable TV networks in 15 provinces and municipalities, signifying China’s access to ultra-HD TV.
